 African swine fever (ASF) หรือไทยเรียกว่า โรคอหิวาต์แอฟริกาในสุกร เป็นโรคที่สามารถเผยแพร่ในหมู่ สุกรทุกเพศทุกวัย สามารถแพร่กระจายเชื้อได้อย่างรวดเร็ว และสามารถคงอยู่ในสภาวะแวดล้อมต่างๆได้ยาวนาน แม้สุกรที่ติดเชื้อจะตายแล้วก็ตาม อัตราการป่วย = 100% และอัตราการตายอยู่ที่ 30%-100% และในลูกสุกรจะมีอัตราการตายสูงถึง 80%-100% ภายใน 14 วัน

อย่างไรก็ตามโรค ASF ไม่เป็นอันตรายต่อมนุษย์ และสัตว์อื่นๆที่ไม่ใช่สุกร แต่มนุษย์และสัตว์ที่เป็นพาหะนำโรค เช่น เห็บหรือแมลงวัน เป็นตัวนำพาเชื้อเข้าไปแพร่กระจายแก่สุกรโดยไม่รู้ตัว และเมื่อเกิดการติดเชื้อภายในโรงเรือนแล้ว แน่นอนว่ากลายเป็นเรื่องใหญ่แน่นอน เพราะในปัจจุบัน ยังไม่มียารักษาหรือวัคซีนป้องกันโรคให้แก่สุกร เมื่อเกิดการติดเชื้อขึ้นมา สิ่งที่ต้องทำคือการทำลายสุกรที่ติดเชื้อและไม่ติดเชื้อทันที เพื่อไม่ให้เชื้อนั้นลุกลาม

เป็นเหตุให้ผู้เลี้ยงหมูรายย่อยหลายราย ตกอยู่ในภาวะลำบาก เนื่องจากไม่สามารถส่งออกหมูได้ และสูญเสียรายได้เป็นจำนวนมาก บวกกับผู้ผลิตรายย่อยหลายรายไม่สามารถปรับตัวกับต้นทุนการเลี้ยงที่เกิดขึ้นใหม่ตามมาตรฐานของหน่วยงานกรมปศุสัตว์

ทำให้ผู้ผลิตรายยย่อยไม่สามารถแบกรับต้นทุนไว้ได้ ส่งผลให้ราคาของหมูในตลาดสูงขึ้น ร้านขายหมูสด และร้านอาหารจำเป็นต้องขึ้นราคา

ดังนั้นผู้เลี้ยงจึงจำเป็นต้องปฏิบัติตามมาตรการด้านความปลอดภัยทางชีวะภาพอย่างเคร่งครัด รวมถึงการเลี้ยงสุกรในระบบโรงเรือนปิด (EVAP) สามารถลดความเสี่ยงในการเกิดโรคแก่ฝูงสัตว์ได้
